The Women’s 2020 Six Nations kicked off over the weekend, and Gloucester-Hartpury had players representing England, Ireland and Wales.

The big fixture of the weekend was France taking on England in Pau, and Simon Middleton’s side had to dig deep to clinch an important 19-13 at the Stade du Hameau.

Mo Hunt and Zoe Aldcroft both started for England, and both players put in a fine shift. Mo had to overcome a nasty blow to the face, but bravely battled on. Zoe was immense up front and, although Emily Scarratt was named Player of the Match, she modestly claimed that it should have been Zoe.

Meanwhile, in Cardiff, it turned out to be a disappointing day for the Gloucester-Hartpury Welsh contingent of Cerys Hales, Kelsey Jones and Bethan Lewis as Italy secured a 19-15 win on the road. The margin could have been wider had it not been for a couple of TMO decisions going against the visitors.

Former Gloucester-Hartpury centre Hannah Jones scored a first half try for Wales, and current Gloucester-Hartpury hooker Kelsey Jones crashed over for a late try after a well-worked lineout move.

Finally, Ellen Murphy started at fly-half for Ireland as they saw off Scotland by 18 points to 14 in a tense encounter at Donnybrook.

Tries from Cliodhna Moloney and Sene Naoupu had put Ireland in control, but Scotland hit back and looked set to level matters only for Ireland wing Beibhinn Parsons to intercept near her own line and run it back all the way for a key score.

Scotland crossed late to narrow the gap but it wasn’t quite enough.
